Edinburgh Introduces Tourist Tax: What You Need to Know

As of July 24, 2026, Edinburgh becomes the first Scottish city to introduce a tourist tax, following in the footsteps of other major European destinations like Amsterdam, Paris, and Rome. The 5% levy will be added to the cost of overnight stays in hotels, bed and breakfasts, and self-catering accommodations, with a maximum charge of five nights. This move aims to generate £50 million to improve the city's infrastructure. The tax is part of the Visitor Levy (Scotland) Bill, which was approved by the Scottish government in May 2024 and later implemented by the City of Edinburgh Council in January 2025. The levy is expected to support the city during its peak summer festival season, which includes the Edinburgh International Festival, Festival Fringe, and other notable events. Notably, asylum seekers are exempt from paying the tax but may need to claim a refund after initial payment.
