Ukraine Launches Daring Strikes on Russian Oil Refineries, Escalating Conflict

In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has successfully targeted two major oil refineries deep within Russian territory. The refineries, Bashneft-Novoil and Slavneft-Yanos, were hit in a series of strikes aimed at crippling Russia's ability to finance its war efforts through oil revenues. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the attacks were carried out using a combination of patrol boats and other vessels in the Black Sea, as well as drone strikes. The Slavneft-Yanos refinery, located approximately 700km from the Ukrainian border, was reportedly set ablaze, with four people injured in the attack. The Bashneft-Novoil refinery, situated about 1,300km from the border, was also struck, although the extent of the damage is not yet clear. The Ukrainian military also reported hitting two Russian military patrol boats and several shadow fleet vessels in the Black Sea, which were allegedly used to export sanctioned oil. The Russian military has responded by intensifying its own attacks on Ukrainian cities, with reports of at least 11 people killed and widespread damage to energy and transport facilities. The conflict has resulted in a significant disruption to internet connectivity in the Kherson region, with NetBlocks reporting a drop to about 31% at its lowest point. As the situation continues to deteriorate, President Zelensky has reiterated his call for Russia to choose peace, emphasizing that Ukrainian attacks are aimed at strengthening the chances for diplomatic resolution.
