Boeing’s 777-9 dilemma: 30 completed jets parked as certification drags onBoeing faces a unique challenge as more than 30 completed 777-9 aircraft sit parked in Washington State, waiting for modification before they can be delivered to customers.
The problem arises due to the lengthy certification process of Boeing's 777X program. The planes have been developed without having finalised the production specifications, which implies that they need substantial modifications to meet the specifications of the aircraft as per the certifications. Even with 4,800 flying hours logged by the testing fleet and 50% of the testing process completed, the aircraft are still grounded.
Lufthansa, which will become the launch operator, is in discussions with Boeing regarding the acceptance of such airplanes. Carsten Spohr, the CEO of Lufthansa, has already declared that if his airline accepts early versions of the aircraft that require modernization, he expects some financial reward. Emirates Airlines has also shown more aggressive attitudes toward the matter, although it ordered 235 planes of the 777-9 family.
Nevertheless, the discussion does not imply stopping the program because there are 650 orders for all variations of the 777X aircraft. The 777-9 provides an ideal balance of range, size, and efficiency.
Boeing still aims at the first deliveries in 2027, and the recent icing tests gave positive results. It means that the aeroplane preserves the required flight qualities in spite of icing.
For now, these parked aircraft showcase both Boeing’s progress and its challenge. The manufacturer must navigate complex commercial negotiations while bringing these early jets up to standard for their eventual customers.
