Britain Swelters: Heatwave Death Toll Surges to Almost 3,000 as Record-Breaking Temperatures Grip the Nation

The UK is reeling from the devastating impact of its most severe heatwave in recent history, with the death toll soaring to nearly 3,000. According to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the number of heat-related deaths has skyrocketed compared to the previous summer. The agency's report reveals that an estimated 8,877 deaths can be attributed to the scorching temperatures in May and June alone, with 753 lives lost during the May heatwave and a further 2,124 during the June heatwave. The Met Office confirmed that England experienced its hottest June on record, with temperatures reaching a sweltering 37.7°C in Lingwood, Norfolk, on June 26, 2026. This shattered the previous record of 35.6°C, which was set in 1957 and matched in 1976. The UKHSA has warned that these figures are likely to rise, with the nation facing multiple spells of extreme heatwaves throughout the summer.
