Cracking Down on Retail Theft: Florida AG Takes Down Multimillion-Dollar Crime Ring

In a major crackdown on organized retail crime, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has announced the takedown of a multimillion-dollar theft ring that targeted major TJX stores across the state. The ring, which operated from May 2020 to April 2022, involved six individuals who conspired to steal merchandise and sell it online, generating millions of dollars in illicit profits. The accused, including Ethel McCaskill, Rochelle Jarrett, Sharon Thomas, Drianna Thomas, Tawanda Ellison, and Tacara Gillyard, exploited vulnerable individuals from homeless shelters to convert stolen goods into gift cards. According to AG Uthmeier, this type of crime is not victimless, as it drives up prices for consumers and harms legitimate businesses. The Florida Attorney General's Office, in partnership with the Polk County Sheriff's Office, has vowed to dismantle these organized retail theft rings and hold perpetrators accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
