Deadly Ebola Outbreak: DR Congo Quarantines River Boat After Mysterious Deaths

A sense of urgency has gripped the Democratic Republic of Congo as a river boat carrying 255 passengers has been quarantined on the Congo River. The decision was made after five passengers died under mysterious circumstances, sparking fears of an Ebola outbreak. The boat, operated by a Chinese company, was intercepted near Bende Bende port, approximately 40 miles upstream from the capital city of Kinshasa. Health Minister Roger Kamba revealed that a passenger who had disembarked at an earlier stop had died in hospital, exhibiting symptoms of fever and diarrhea. Further investigations led to the discovery of two more adult deaths, as well as the deaths of a three-year-old child and a newborn. As a precautionary measure, all passengers are undergoing Ebola and cholera screening. The World Health Organization (WHO) has teamed up with local health authorities to conduct tests and prevent the potential spread of the virus into Kinshasa. The vessel had traveled over 1,700 kilometers downstream from Kisangani, the country's third-largest city, where recent Ebola cases have been reported. The DRC has been battling its 17th Ebola outbreak since May 15, caused by the rare Bundibugyo species, which has no specific drug treatment or vaccine. With 3,973 confirmed cases and 1,801 deaths, the outbreak is considered the second deadliest in history. As the situation continues to unfold, officials are reinforcing surveillance and rapid-response capacity in Kinshasa, preparing for a possible Bundibugyo response.
