France Scorched: Record-Breaking Heatwave Brings Drought and Wildfires

A severe heatwave has left France reeling, with July being declared the hottest month on record. The country's weather service, Meteo-France, confirmed that the month surpassed previous heatwave records set in August 2003 and July 2006. This extreme weather has been accompanied by a significant drought, with rainfall levels plummeting to nearly 70% below average. The dry conditions have led to parched soil and an increased risk of wildfires, with the largest wildfire in France since 1949 breaking out in July. The fire, which started on July 22, ravaged 42,000 hectares of land, an area four times the size of Paris. The successive heatwaves that have gripped Europe since May have been attributed to human-caused climate change, with scientists warning of more frequent and intense heatwaves in the future.
