NYC E-Bike Crackdown: Mayor Zohran Mamdani Takes Aim at Illegal Vehicles

In a bid to enhance road safety, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has launched a crackdown on e-bikes and e-scooters that exceed the city's speed limits. The move comes after a series of accidents, including a fatal incident involving a 17-year-old driver near City Hall. The victim was riding a Deepower QS7 e-bike, which can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour, far exceeding the allowed limit of 15 miles per hour in bike lanes. In response, Mayor Mamdani has issued cease-and-desist orders to 42 retailers, including major players like Amazon, Walmart, and Target, giving them until August 18, 2026, to comply with the new guidelines. Failure to do so will result in a $2,000 fine. The mayor's initiative aims to address the growing concern over the safety of e-bikes and e-scooters, which have become increasingly popular in the city. The New York City Council has also announced a comprehensive review of existing laws to identify additional solutions to ensure public safety.
