Raging Infernos: Spain Battles Devastating Wildfires Amid Scorching Heatwave

A severe heatwave has engulfed Spain, sparking one of the most destructive wildfires the country has seen in decades. The blazes have ravaged thousands of hectares across multiple regions, with temperatures soaring to 40 °C (104 °F). The situation is particularly dire in Madrid and Avila, where hotspots near Burgohondo and San Martín de Valdeiglesias have forced the evacuation of approximately 70,000 people. In Zomara, Fermoselle, authorities have allowed residents to return to 12 out of 14 evacuated localities, but the situation remains precarious in inaccessible areas of the Arribes del Duero canyon. Castellon has been the hardest hit, with 10,000 evacuees still unable to return home as the flames continue to threaten communities.
