Ukraine Under Siege: Deadly Russian Strikes Reignite Calls for Enhanced Air Defense

A devastating series of Russian missile and drone strikes has left at least 21 people dead in Ukraine, prompting a renewed plea from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for increased support from allies, particularly in the form of advanced Patriot missile interceptors. The attacks, which targeted the capital city of Kyiv and surrounding regions, as well as the cities of Kharkiv and Donetsk, have been described as the deadliest in the region this year. Zelensky emphasized that timely delivery of anti-ballistic systems from international partners could have prevented the 'horrific casualties and destruction' witnessed in the recent assaults. The Russian defense ministry claimed that the strikes were aimed at logistics hubs and supply centers involved in the storage and distribution of military supplies and unmanned aerial vehicles. Ukraine's air force reported that Russia launched 24 ballistic missiles and four anti-ship missiles, along with 115 drones, during the attack. While air defense systems managed to intercept 98 of the drones, the effectiveness of these systems has shown a decline compared to the same period last year, according to data analyzed by BBC Verify. This decrease in interception efficiency, combined with an 83% increase in Russian missile launches, underscores the urgency of Ukraine's request for enhanced air defense capabilities.
