Maggie Gyllenhaal has opened up about an AI test she tried while making her new short film.
The filmmaker used AI to turn Dakota Johnson into Marilyn Monroe for the project Flesh Impact.
At first, Maggie was curious and wanted to see what the technology could do. The team trained the AI using licensed films of Marilyn and then used it to put Marilyn’s face over Dakota’s.
But when Maggie saw the result, she did not like it.
She, however, felt Dakota’s real acting was much better than what the AI could create.
Maggie said Dakota’s performance was “so much more moving, human, alive”.
She also said the AI version “fundamentally did not work”.
Because of this, she decided not to use the AI version in the film.
The filmmaker also talked about her bigger worries about AI in movies.
She is concerned about the amount of energy needed to run AI systems and the effect this can have on the environment.
Maggie also fears that AI could make movies much cheaper to produce as she also warned that this could make it harder for filmmakers who still want to make films in the usual way.
For Maggie, the test showed that AI may copy a person’s face, but it cannot replace real human acting.
