Canada and Pakistan Strengthen Ties: A New Era of Cooperation and Development

In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, Canada and Pakistan have agreed to expand cooperation in key areas such as trade, investment, security, and development. The agreement was reached during a joint press conference held in Islamabad, where Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand outlined the details of their discussions. The two nations have a long history of friendship, with Canada being one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Pakistan. The visit of the Canadian Foreign Minister to Pakistan, the first in nearly two decades, marks a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries. Canada has pledged over $47 million in assistance for security and development initiatives in Pakistan, including $2.2 million for security cooperation projects and $45 million for development assistance. The two countries have also agreed to hold annual meetings to review progress on their joint statement and to work towards the early conclusion of a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPPA). The agreement is expected to provide a boost to trade and investment between the two countries, with Canada looking to increase its exports of products such as canola, while Pakistan seeks to increase its exports of products such as rice, textiles, and sporting goods.
